Week 4 Countdown Review (ending 2/8)
This is the 4th Countdown, and the 4th #1. There were no dominant singles submitted, as the previous #1's usually fall out of the running for the next Countdown. Again, this week, is no different.....
Who would have thought? There were 31 candidates that entered the Top 10 Countdown, and low and behold, who's fans came out to support none-other-than Alexandria/Arlington's very own, Cheif Merkh (@merkhaveli). It was Merkh's second time on the Countdown but with a different single, Orbit, and this time, he happened to come out with 16% of the vote, coming out as the winner, and much to his surprise. You can hear the Top 10 Countdown on Episode #75 Untitled 33 of the P³ Entertainment Radio Show.
Though Orbit was selected by the editors of the Top 10 Countdown as a longshot, 31:1, to even place in the top 10, Cheif Merkh had enough support from his fanbase, whether he knows it or not.
The show of being humble and thanking his fans and followers, is one of the reasons why he received the votes into first place. When an artist shows humility and thankfulness to those that listen out for them, they will show their support. On top of an improving ear for beats, and improving delivery; the reward is a 1st place finish among those who may have been considered the odds on favorite to receive the majority of votes. One of those favorites was the last winner, Blow Em, by Smoke Greene (@SmokeGreenDMV), which didn't even finish in this Top 10.
Cheif Merkh has much to thankful for, with this 1st place finish, as well as a new downloadable album entitled, MERKHOLOPIS, which can be downloaded HERE; he has laid the groundwork to start a movement. It is rare to find an artist of Afghan descent in the game, and usually when there is an artist that comes from a different ethnic background, they use that as a launchpad for recognition; but not Merkh. He simply grabs the microphone and does his thing; not mentioning his background in rhyme; only wanting to be recognized for his skill, not his bloodline.
Will he keep up the work with more material, promotion of that material, and finding a formula to gain exposure for his career? Or is Cheif Merkh simply another rapper, who's making music just to make music, and will be here today, making music for his yard, and gone tomorrow?
Persistence and promoting the music is what's going to keep songs like Orbit in the Top 10, or even, played on the P³ Entertainment Radio Show.
If everyone on your team, including yourself, your fans, and followers vote, you can gauge your base. Hustlin' for votes isn't that hard, simply ReTweet the link to the Voting Booth each week there is a Countdown, and that's all that needs to be done. Don't allow that thing called an ego get in the way of not voting, not even for yourself. You have to take pride in your music, whether or not you take the top position. Simply campaign a little harder, and spread the word that you're looking for approval of your material from the fans and followers. With the number of candidates on the ballot, and the announcements being sent out through Twitter to vote; no candidate should have zero votes.
There is no gold chalice or blue ribbon for taking the #1 spot on a weekly basis, but campaigning and getting your team, fans, and followers to vote for your work and actually seeing the results, the fruits of your labor is worth the acknowledgement and honor of being #1.
Though P³ Entertainment is relatively unknown to most, we create an alternate avenue to have your music played during a semi-professional broadcast of mainstream and independent music. We attempt to bring an underground sound to internet radio and give a chance to independent artists that your local and national radio stations will never give a chance. That is the benefit of submitting your music to the P³ Entertainment Radio Show, either as a regular play or as an entry into the Countdown. That is the benefit of getting played on the show; another avenue to be heard and show that you do have a loyal following. You never know who may be listening, and if you show consistency, that's when the majors may come knocking.
This weeks Countdown was rounded out as such:

Artist Spotlight: Yung Jay
![]() |
"Life Is Too Short To Be Bullshittin'", Dead Presidents (2012) |
Now under new management, a Twitter follow and a supportive co-sign from 'The Based God' Lil' B, the unique ability to captivate the listeners with sensible lyrics that'll make you listen and respect, and a buzz in the region; Yung Jay is bound to have his name heard beyond the DMV borders. The sky's the limit for this old soul of an adolescent.
Recently, Yung Jay announced that his debut EP entitled: Static Talk is in post-production and scheduled for release in the near future. The first single released from the EP, Gotta Make It, is a remix of West Coast rap artist, Dom Kennedy's "Gold Alpinas", is a testament of a young man's struggle with so much negativity going on around him and the yearn to make it out alive, whether doing right or wrong, at the same time apologizing to his mother for the wrong decisions he makes along the way.
To assure a successful release of Static Talk, check out, comment, and {LIKE} Yung Jay on Facebook at Yung Jay the Rapper, and do the same with a comment for the single, Gotta Make It, on Soundcloud. All feedback is much appreciated for a successful release of the Static Talk EP.
Lets support the independent artists, as they are the key to bringing back the diversity to music that is so lacking right now.
